Abstract

This study systematically investigates the development of citizenship behaviour in tourism by identifying its evolving conceptualization, core antecedents, mediating and moderating mechanisms, and associated outcomes. Using the PRISMA-ScR methodology, relevant journal articles published between 2015 and 2025, 111 articles were retrieved from Scopus and Web of Science, focusing exclusively on English-language peer-reviewed articles. The analysis, supported by Microsoft Excel, reveals that the concept has expanded from traditional organizational behaviour models to include context-specific prosocial actions by tourists, residents, and employees. Key antecedents are categorised into internal and external drivers, while the outcomes range from enhanced service and environmental performance to emotional well-being and loyalty. Mediators such as place attachment and brand engagement, and moderators like perceived risk and psychological ownership, illustrate the complex interactions between variables. This systematic review not only synthesises a fragmented body of literature but also proposes a conceptual mapping that contributes to both academic theory and managerial practice. It offers a strategic foundation for scholars and practitioners aiming to cultivate prosocial, sustainable, and engagement-driven behaviours in tourism ecosystems. © 2026 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
