The content of Karamunting (Rhodomyrtus tomentosa) has an anti-inflammatory effect. E. coli is one of the most common bacteria causing postpartum infection, which has LPS that can be released as endotoxin and triggers the discharge of proinflammatory cytokines namely TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-Iβ. This study amis to know the effect of Rhodomyrtus tomentosa leaves ethanolic extract (Ee Rhto) on TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β levels in postpartum mice infected with E. coli (puerperal mice model). Twenty-five female mice were randomly assigned to five groups comprised of five mice each, consisting of negative control (normal mice), positive control (intravaginally induced by E. coli at a dose of 1 × 107CFU/mL) and Ee Rhto I; Ee Rhto II; Ee Rhto III (given E. coli and Ee Rhto with a dose of 100; 200; 400 mg/kgBW, respectively) once 2 hours after infection with E. coli. The levels of TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β from blood plasma were measured by ELISA. The results found that TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β cytokines levels are smaller in the treatment group than in the positive control group. Administration of the lowest dose of Ee Rhto (100 mg/kgBW) can lower the levels of TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β in postpartum mice infected with E. coli (puerperal mice model). © 2023 American Institute of Physics Inc..
