Abstract

Lead is the most common pollutant that enters human life through industrial wastewater and causes various diseases. The main source of lead pollution in water comes from industrial processes. Since this pollutant is non-biodegradable, it stays in the environment and causes serious diseases such as damage to the nervous system and kidneys. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with outer diameters in the range of 1-100 nm have shown promising nanomaterials for adsorbents owing to their large specific area. It has a specific hollow and layered structure and has been used as adsorption material to remove organic and inorganic contaminants. In this study, the effect of functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (f-MWCNTs) was investigated for Pb2+ adsorption to adsorbent derived from cocoa shells (ACs). A composite of f-MWCNTs and ACs with a composition ratio of 0:1, 1:3, 1:1, and 3:1 was used. Pb (II) Nitrate powder diluted in distilled water with a ratio of 1:10 to reach Pb (II) Nitrate solution concentration of 100 ppm was used as a standard solution within this study. The amount of Pb2+ degradations is observed periodically every 15 minutes for 120 minutes. The adsorption result reveals that the optimum adsorption capacity of Pb2+ obtained at 46.667 mg/g for an adsorption duration of 15 minutes for the mass ratio of f-MWCNT and ACS is 1:3 w/w. © 2024 Author(s).
