In seismic-rich developing countries such as Indonesia, the need for integrated seismometers and monitoring systems continues to increase. Existing seismic stations are few and poorly distributed, especially those installed around volcanoes. To improve the overall monitoring system, the number of seismic stations should be increased even if commercial seismometers are currently out of reach. Therefore, this basic research aims to develop low-cost sensors to monitor seismic activity of active volcanoes using the Tri-axial Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). The type of IMU used in this study is the MPU-9250 with an embedded MPU-6050 architecture. Equipped with a tri-axial accelerometer and gyroscope, MPU-9250 works based on Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS). This sensor is capable of detecting changes in acceleration up to ±157.0 m.s-2 or ±16 g-force on all three accelerometer axes. This sensor calibration is carried out by feeding a simulated seismic signal and observing the recorded data. The accelerometer and gyroscope responses show significant particle motion similar to that of an earthquake seismogram. Therefore, the use of a tri-axial IMU as a sensor for monitoring seismic activity is considered suitable. © 2024 Author(s).
