Abstract

Microalgae are grown to make biofuels, a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. This chapter aims to detail about microalgae biofuels and their significance, processes for biofuel production from microalgae, algal farming approaches, and an integrated biorefinery approach for better utilization of microalgal products. It has been observed that even though microalgae have a great potential and scope to fuel the biorefinery in the future, upstream and downstream processing of algal-based biofuels and biorefinery necessitates further research and development. Additional effort is required to grow, develop, and utilize algal strains that have a high potential for biofuel production. Therefore, the authors can say that microalgae and its biofuels have its future scope, and it is important to unlock its full potential by solving the current challenges. The way forward will be encompassing circular economy principles to enable sustainable development of microalgal technologies. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
