The iron and nitrogen co-doped pineapple fruit peel biochar (Fe-N-PPBC) was prepared for Acid yellow 23 (AY23) dye elimination from aqueous system. For Fe-N-PPBC, pH 2 with a 300 mg L−1 AY23 dye concentration, showed maximum 95% dye removal with an adsorbent dose of 1 g in 40 min, whereas PPBC exhibited 91% dye removal with 1.5 g adsorbent dose in 60 min. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order models were found best fit with the experimental results. The negative Gibbs free energy (ΔG°) describes the spontaneous behavior of the adsorption process. Both PPBC and Fe-N-PPBC can be reutilized, as reflected by 39% and 51% AY23 dye elimination ability after five consecutive cycles. PPBC- and Fe-N-PPBC-treated AY23 dye solution significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced growth and biochemical parameters of Cicer arietinum. The Fe-N-PPBC owned the merits of easy synthesis, high efficiency, stability and reusability, acts as a green promising material for the conversion of dye-contaminated wastewater into valuable asset, thus promoting a closed loop economy for the sustainable future. © 2025 The Author(s).
