Flash floods detection in Tulungagung Regency after heavy rain on October 3, 2022 using SAR imagery

Abstract

This study investigates the flash flood event in Tulungagung Regency, Indonesia, on October 3, 2022, using Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. The research employs Google Earth Engine (GEE) to process SAR data for flood detection and mapping. By comparing pre-flood and post-flood Sentinel-1 imagery, the study identifies flood-affected areas, with a focus on the three sub-districts of Campurdarat, Pakel, and Bandung. The methodology includes speckle filtering, change detection, and masking of permanent water bodies using Sentinel-2 Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) data. Results reveal significant flood inundation in the southern parts of Tulungagung, corroborating with local disaster management reports and news sources. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of freely available SAR data and cloud computing platforms like GEE in rapid flood mapping and assessment. The rainfall, ranging from 10 to 118 mm, which occurred on October 2 to October 3, 2022, became a driving factor for the flooding. These areas include the sub-districts of Campurdarat, Pakel and Bandung, with flood zone areas measuring 146.99 ha, 341.16 ha and 337.04 ha respectively. This research contributes to the understanding of flood patterns in Tulungagung and provides valuable insights for future disaster planning and mitigation efforts in the region. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
