Decolorization Study of Acid Blue 25 Using Immobilized Trametes Hirsuta EDN082 in Light Expanded Clay Aggregate (LECA)

Abstract

Acid blue 25 is one of the anthraquinone dyes that is frequently used in many industrial activities. This dye will harm the environment if this released without an efficient method. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to study the ability of the immobilized Trametes hirsuta EDN 082 in light-expanded clay (LECA) for decolorization acid blue 25 (AB25) dye. The comparative decolorization of AB25 dye was conducted using control-activated LECA, free and immobilized mycelia in LECA. The results showed that the fungal mycelia adsorbed and adhered into LECA, growing not only on the surface but also in the inside part of the LECA. The immobilization of fungal strain enhanced the decolorization up to 89.50% compared with free cell (61.1%) and only control LECA (9.25%) within 24 h of incubation time. Moreover, during all the contact times of decolorization test, treatment using immobilized mycelia exhibited higher laccase activities than that of free cell. The present study successfully demonstrated the use of LECA material to immobilize fungal mycelia of T. hirsuta EDN 082 for decolorization of AB25 dye and this technique could be a promising alternative for synthetic dye wastewater treatment in the future. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
