Characteristic of soft soils in Langsa District, Aceh, have low bearing capacity and high compressibility, which can cause significant settlement phenomenon by upper-structure or infrastructure construction. This study aims to determine the magnitude of the settlement due to the actual load and time analysis required by the preloading method. The research method includes the soil parameter arrangement using Standard Penetration Test, Laboratory data, and settlement analysis using Terzaghi's consolidation theory. Configuration layers of soft soil were taken from ground surface to five layers type at the borlogs-NSPT data or DB-1, with an actual load of 34 kN/m2 and a preloading load of 150.7 kN/m2. The results of the analysis showed that the magnitude of settlement due to the actual load was 0.328 m, while the settlement using the preloading method would reach 0.920 m. From settlement analysis using the preloading, the degree of consolidation would achieve 35.65% with an estimated consolidation time would reach 13 years. This research would have some analytical evidence that the preloading method is more effective to accelerate the settlement and to increase the shear strength. However, additional method such as Prefabricated Vertical Drain (PVD) is recommended to make faster of the settlement-consolidation time. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
