Interaction of Sex Ratio and Differences in Spawning Substrates on the Productivity and Spawning Success of Gobiopterus sp.

Abstract

This research aims to provide valuable insights for optimizing artificial spawning procedures for lempuk fish (Gobiopterus sp.) to support the domestication process. The study employed an experimental approach using a factorial completely randomized design (CRD) with two factors and three replications: substrate type (A) and broodstock sex ratio (B). The substrate treatments consisted of banana leaves, coconut leaves, and synthetic leaves, while the broodstock sex ratios tested were 1:1 (seven males and seven females), 2:1 (fourteen males and seven females), and 3:1 (twenty-one males and seven females). The experiment lasted one month, with weekly sampling. Measured parameters included reproductive viability, fertilization rate, and survival of lempuk fish. The findings showed that both substrate type (A) and sex ratio (B) had a significant effect on all reproductive parameters. Treatment A3B2 (synthetic leaf substrate combined with a 2:1 male-to-female ratio) produced the best performance, yielding 91.3% reproductive viability, 86.9% fertilization, and 82.4% survival. Water quality parameters remained within optimal ranges throughout the experiment: temperature 24.2– 25.3°C, pH 7.2– 8.0, dissolved oxygen 4– 5.2mg/ L, nitrate 0.02– 0.15mg/ L, phosphate 0.1– 0.3mg/ L, ammonia 0.02– 0.1mg/ L, TSS 24– 41mg/ L, and TDS 136– 191mg/ L. These results indicate that using a synthetic spawning substrate combined with a 2:1 male-to-female broodstock ratio can improve reproductive performance and support the domestication of lempuk fish. © 2025, Egyptian Society for the Development of Fisheries and Human Health.
