Environmental Risks Due to Sand Blasting Dust in Dock and Shipyard Areas Based on Particulate Matter Value

Abstract

The blasting process is carried out before the painting process during construction work and ship hull repair at the dock and shipyard. There are several abrasive materials used in the blasting process, one of which is silica sand, which can cause dust that is dangerous for humans and the environment. Referring to the Republic of Indonesia government regulation number 22 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Environmental Protection and Management, the threshold value for PM 2.5 is 55 µg/m3 (in 24 hours) and PM 10 is 75 µg/m3 (in 24 hours). This study aims to analyze the distribution of dust risks from the sand blasting process based on particulate matter values in dock and shipyard areas. In this research, data has been collected on the value of particulate matter 2.5 µm and particulate matter 10 µm before the sand blasting process, during the sand blasting process, and after the sand blasting process at points at a specified distance from the dock. From the results of the analysis it can be concluded that the PM 2.5 and PM 10 values during the sand blasting process in open spaces at docks and shipyards for all directions from the dock exceed the specified threshold values, with the risk of dust spreading furthest in the west direction due to the direction wind during the sand blasting process. This means that the risk of dust during the sand blasting process is very dangerous for the health of living creatures, especially workers in docks and shipyards as well as the environment around the shipyard. © 2025 Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l.-All rights reserved.
