Abstract

Mode I (opening) fractures are well-established in the concept and application of fracture mechanics. However, in the case of ductile materials, mixed-mode fracture mechanics under multiaxial loading still requires many very challenging studies to be further explored. This study is intended to provide an in-depth review of mixed-mode fracture mechanics in materials within the framework of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics. The review covers the state from crack initiation to crack propagation. The parameters and associated fracture criteria are presented briefly, yet they still provide up-to-date information. Determining fracture parameters only involves related parameters; those unrelated to elastic-plastic materials are not presented. Through this review, it is found that the fracture toughness of elastic-plastic materials is increased by the dominance of mode II loading compared to mode I loading. This overview helps develop mixedmode fracture criteria for ductile materials in engineering structures, buildings, and testing. © 2025 Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l. - All rights reserved.
