Abstract

This chapter provides a comprehensive review of the Methanol to Gasoline (MTG) process, highlighting its importance in addressing the increasing global demand for gasoline in the context of depleting fossil fuel reserves and environmental issues. The MTG process involves the catalytic transformation of methanol into hydrocarbons suitable for gasoline, predominantly utilizing ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts. The discussion focuses on reaction mechanisms, reactor configurations, and advancements in catalyst technology to optimize methanol conversion efficiency. This chapter emphasizes the significance of selecting suitable feedstocks for methanol production, encompassing both non-renewable sources such as natural gas and coal, as well as renewable alternatives like biomass and CO2. Recent innovations in fluidized-bed reactor designs are explored, showcasing their advantages over traditional fixed-bed systems in terms of operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Overall, this chapter underscores the potential of MTG technology as a sustainable alternative to conventional gasoline production, contributing to energy. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
