Islamic attributes and religiosity: a meta-analysis of their influence on halal tourism preferences

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to examine the effect of Islamic attributes and religiosity on halal tourism preferences and exploring interaction and collectively contribution to shaping the halal tourism market. Design/methodology/approach – This study uses a meta-analysis approach, integrating data from prior studies indexed in Scopus. This is a quantitative study based on statistical methods that examine the relationship pattern between Islamic attributes, religiosity and halal tourism preferences. Findings – This study finds that Islamic attributes are considerable determinants in preferring halal tourism; these include halal facilities, prayer spaces and Sharia-compliant services. Another major factor is religiosity, the propensity to undertake halal travel is associated with higher levels of religiosity. Furthermore, the association of Islamic attributes and religiosity makes their combined impact greater on tourist satisfaction and destination loyalty. Practical implications – These findings highlight the critical importance of developing tourism strategies that integrate both the spiritual and practical needs of Muslim travelers. These efforts are not only aligned with the religiosity-driven preferences of Muslim tourists but also contribute to emotional attachment and higher revisit intentions. Originality/value – This study provides a comprehensive meta-analytical perspective that enhances theoretical understanding of how Islamic attributes and religiosity influence tourist satisfaction and loyalty. It offers practical guidance for industry practitioners and policy recommendations for tourism authorities, especially in the design of spiritually enriching and Shariah-compliant travel experiences, supporting the sustainable growth of halal tourism globally. © 2025 Emerald Publishing Limited
