Abstract

This study integrates Geographic Information System (GIS) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to assess the land suitability for pangasius aquaculture in Tulungagung Regency, East Java. The research, conducted from January to August 2022, evaluates water quality, soil characteristics, and infrastructure to identify suitable areas for sustainable aquaculture development. Using AHP, the study quantifies the relative importance of different parameters, and GIS is used to map the suitability categories. The findings reveal that 59% of the region’s land is suitable or most suitable for aquaculture, with a total of 976,885.71 ha available for development. The study also identifies key challenges, such as the need to consider existing land uses (e.g., settlements, agriculture) in the planning process. By mapping the land suitability based on environmental and infrastructural factors, the research offers an innovative tool for policy makers and aquaculture practitioners to prioritize areas for expansion while ensuring the sustainability of the aquaculture industry. The study provides valuable insights for the future development of pangasius farming in Tulungagung and sets a precedent for similar applications in other regions. © 2025 Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Universitas Airlangga.
