This article is a pilot project, aiming to explore the the resistance strategies employed by women in oppressed domestic situations within the context of Javanese patriarchal culture in the 17th century, as decpicted in the first volume of Serat Chentini. Given that the oppression of women persists in private (domestic) settings today, examining this issue through the historico-cultural lens of ancient Javanese text is considered crucial. This study utilizes Sara Mills’ critical discourse analysis and feminist perspective as its methodological framework. The findings initiate that female characters in Serat Centhini must first develop a keen awareness of the oppressive circumstances. Subsequently, they adopt strategies such as cautious behavior and careful choice of words, to resist and navigate oppressive environments. These strategies and navigational techniques are particularly relevant in a patriarchal culture that does not conform to conventional norms. Women must transition from being mere objects to becoming subjects while simultaneosly striving to maintain a harmonious household. © 2025 The Author(s).
