Abstract

Context: Cancer is one of the causes of death throughout the world. There are around 9.6 million deaths from cancer every year throughout the world, with 70% of cancer deaths occurring in developing countries in the world. Natural species like Anredera cordifolia is the old-world diamond flower. It is historically important in traditional Chinese medicine. It's commonly found in Indonesia, notably Java, and has gained attention for its potential anticancer effects. Aims: To evaluate the existing research on the bioactive compounds of A. cordifolia leaves and their anticancer potentials. Methods: The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA), using databases like PubMed, ResearchGate, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar via Rayyan.ai. Sixteen included primary studies were analyzed descriptively. Results: Results revealed A. cordifolia active compounds acting against anticancer. Activities included anti-proliferation (induce Cav-1, reduce glycolysis pathway, p38, MAPK, and ERK 1/2), apoptosis, antioxidant effects, cytotoxicity, inhibiting tumor progression genes, reducing metastatic genes (MMP-9), and enhancing pro-apoptotic genes (BAX, P53, caspase-3, caspase-8, caspase-9, cleaved PARP). Conclusions: According to the mechanisms studied, A. cordifolia extract could be showed promise as a potential anti-cancer agent. © 2025 Journal of Pharmacy & Pharmacognosy Research.
