The effect of powder composition on hardness, porosity and micro-structure of Al-SiC-Mg composite by hot isostatic pressing method

Abstract

This study aims to determine the variations in the composition of aluminum with silicon carbide and magnesium alloys by powder metallurgy processes. This study used 5 composition variations including 70% Al with 12%, 16%, 20%, 24%, and 28% of SiC, and 18%, 14%, 10%, 6%, and 2% of Mg. Powdered aluminum, silicon carbide, and magnesium are evenly mixed with alcohol with a concentration of 70% and then put into the mold of the Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) machine and compacted at a pressure of 3000 psi with a temperature of 400 oC sintering process (heating) and waiting time of 15 minutes holding time. The tests carried out were the Rockwell hardness test, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and porosity. The results showed that the highest hardness value was 41.7 HRB in specimen V with Al composition 70% - 16% SiC - 14% and the lowest porosity value was 0.5679% in specimen V with Al composition 70% - 16% SiC - 14%. © 2025 Author(s).
