Silver-based nanoparticles (AgNPs) have recently been used because of the distinctive physicochemical properties and diversified applications. Ag-based NPs show antimicrobial potency which make them use in the treatment of wastewater, control of agricultural diseases, and air filters. Their photocatalytic activity allows for degradation of organic pollutants, dyes, and toxic contaminants, ensuring environmental sustainability. Despite their extensive applications, the storage and stability of AgNPs are still a major challenge. Methods like inert atmosphere packaging, polymer coating, UV-protected containers, and controlled storage environments ensure their functional integrity. Research is moving towards more environmentally friendly synthesis techniques with the help of biological agents to reduce toxicity and environmental effects. This review covers diversified applications of AgNPs for their antimicrobial activity, dye degradation activity, remediation of contaminated soil, pollution control of airborne pollutants, agro-applications, automotive engineering, glass nanocomposites, and electronics applications. The prospect of AgNPs in nanocomposites, targeted delivery systems, and enhanced characterization techniques offer promising avenues for the future. This review discusses the sustainable development of AgNPs to enable them to advance further in science and technology. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.
