Abstract

This paper proposes a scaffolding system in problem-posing learning environment, called Monsakun, to increase learner's awareness of the problem's structure of arithmetic word problems. The proposed system detect individual learner's bottleneck in real-time while posing a problem and adaptively provide a personalized task based on the bottleneck found. It is aimed to support the learner in overcoming the bottlenecks and gaining a better knowledge of the structure of the problem. In Monsakun, these bottlenecks are commonly identified as a frequently use of a particular dummy. When the dummy can be identified, it might be the principal factor to help learners to overwhelm their difficulty. The proposed system formulates problem-posing processes from the history of learner's actions, detecting the bottleneck, generating a new task setting, and providing a personalized task to the learner. It is expected to foster learner's consideration about the problem structure while posing arithmetic word problems on Monsakun. © 2017 IEEE.
