Background To determine the effect of topical administration of betamethasone on IOP elevation and morphological changes to the trabecular meshwork (TM) and Schlemm's canal (SC) in Wistar rats Methods This study was a true experimental laboratory in vivo design comparing the pre and post designtreated control group. The sample was divided into three groups: A negative control group and two experimental groups, one of which received one drop of betamethasone topically four times daily for four weeks, and the other of which received one drop eight times daily for four weeks. Results There were no statistically significant differences between the control and experimental groups in terms of IOP measurements (p = 0.605). However, there were statistically significant differences in SC diameter (p = 0.002) and TM thickness (p = 0.044) between the control and experimental groups. Conclusion There were no significant effects on IOP elevation, but there was narrowing of the SC diameter and increases in TM thickness due to topical administration of betamethasone. © 2018 Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications.
