An ethnomedicinal survey was undertaken to inventory medicinal plants used by Tenggerese of Wonokitri Village, and to determine local perception (knowledge) and appreciation (application) of the medicinal plants. Ethnobotanical research was conducted using direct and indirect interviews (questionnaires) on 221 Tenggerese informants included a key person (pak dukun). The informants were grouped based on age, namely 17-29, 30-44, 45-59 and ≥ 60 years old. The recommended plants were collected, identified and documented. Accumulated data was tabulated, analyzed and presented using graphs. As a result, there were 24 species belonging to 15 families used to treat 17 disease symptoms. The most recommended plants were Acorus calamus Linn. (dringu) (43.0%) for fever (sawan, Java), Brugmansia suaveolens L. (kecubung) (36.2%) for diarrhea, hypertension and cough, and Foeniculum vulgare Mill. (adas) (34.0%) for cough, fever and sprain. The perception of Tenggerese aged 17-59 years old to medicinal plants were categorized as Good, whereas those ≥ 60 year olds were categorized as Sufficient. Furthermore, the appreciation of medicinal plants within the people aged 30-59 year olds were categorized as Good, whereas those aged 17-29 years old and ≥ 60 years old were categorized as Sufficient. Local knowledge and practices of using medicinal plants in Wonokitri Village have been maintained well, but there are some threats to their sustainability. Continued use of medicinal plants in traditional Tenggerese medicinal treatments, and transfer of knowledge to the next generation, will support the quality of health and conserve the integrity of plants in the region. © 2018 Author(s).
