The effect of palm fibers addition on density, porosity, water discharge and TDS of the natural zeolite ceramic

Abstract

The manufacture of porous ceramic membrane based on natural zeolite and palm fibers was done. Zeolite powders were sieved using 80 mesh and 120 mesh sieves. Moreover, the size was in the range from 80 mesh to below 120 mesh. It was mixed with palm fibers with diverse percentages of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% wt palm fibers. Preparation of mixing raw materials used ball mill to obtain evenly mixed powder. Ceramics were made through sintering process at temperature of 900°C, heating rate of 5°C/min, and holding time of 2 hours. This membrane ceramic is expected to decrease the TDS value. The recorded data included volume, weight, hardness, water discharge, and value of TDS (Total Dissolved Solids). Measurement of volume and weight used the Archimedes' principle. The results of this study showed that the addition of palm fibers could decrease the density, increase the porosity. The highest hardness was obtained by specimen with the 5% wt fibers, with the higher water discharge and the lower TDS value. © 2018 Author(s).
