Abstract

This study aimed to determine characteristics of host tree for epiphytes in protected area of UB Forest, Karangploso, Malang. Tree vegetation analysis was carried out along the cruising method. Observed trees were recorded their species name and morphological characteristics such as tree height, diameter, bark surface, and canopy coverage. Epiphytes analysis was performed on a 50x50 cm2 plot in each epiphytic zone. The research result showed that epiphytes found were 19 species belonging to six families and divided into four groups namely Pterydophyta, Orchidaceae, Piperaceae, and Asteraceae. The trees number found in observation area were 98 individuals, and among them there were 55 trees as epiphytes hosts. The characteristics of epiphytic host tree generally had a tree diameter >50 cm with height ranging from 4 to 20 m (Stratum C). Epiphytic plants grew preferably on host tree with dense canopy and rough bark textures. Epiphytes density increased along tree diameter of host tree. © 2018 Author(s).
