The purpose of this study was to collect information on the species Canavalia maritima, including morphological identification, distribution (ecology), plant communities, and local economic interests. It is a liana-shrub, endemic to the coatal dunes located, on sandy beaches in the southern region of the the isalnd of Java, Indonesia. The survey methods that used in this research were materials of plant specimens and open-ended interviews. Specimens of plants for the herbarium were collected in triplicate, prepared, determined and saved in the Herbarium Brawijaya University (MUBR). Canavalia maritima includes one species, native to sand dunes on, beaches on South Java island. This species grows well, abundant in hot climates and has good survival in the southern coastal environment. Seeds germinating at the onset of the rainy season have a better survival rate. Local people sometimes use their flowers, seeds, and stem, for their daily needs. This species is very important to protect the beach and coastal dunes, as well as for the protection of coastal infrastructure. © 2018 Author(s).
