The use of Pin-Pex insulator on a 20-kV Pin-Post insulator can significantly reduce the leakage current and the annual energy losses. By adding the Pin-Pex insulators, the leakage current increases with the increase in wetting intensity and voltage level. In this paper, the average reduction of leakage current as much as 27.6% has been obtained during the experiments with various wetting intensities and voltage levels. The smallest leakage current reduction has been obtained at the smallest wetting intensity of 11.1% during the experiment, whereas the largest reduction has been obtained at the wetting intensity of 40.0%. At the testing voltage of 10-kV and the wetting intensity of 4.02mm/min, the use of Pin-Pex could reduce the annual energy losses by 37.3% from 258-kWh before the Pin-Pex installation. © 2018 IEEE.
