Abstract

In the previous study, many researchers have done to improve the energy absorption of crash box due to axial impact. In the crash test, crash box is commonly subjected to both axial and oblique. In this study, crash box design with initial fold is modelled by using application software based on Finite Element Analysis. The effect of placement ratio and initial fold angle on crash box subjected to oblique loading is investigated. The placement ratio is set as 1:2, 1:1, and 2:1 measured from the total height of crash box. The initial fold angle is varied with 90°, 60° and 45°. Crash box material is Mild Steel ASTM E-04. Crash box material is assumed as bilinear isotropic hardening material. The crash test is modelled as oblique loading crash test. The oblique loading angle used on impactor is 60°. Based on computer simulation results, it can be showed that the deformation pattern of initial fold crash box occurred as buckling and axial mode. The crash box design with placement ratio 1:2 and initial fold angle 90° produce the highest value of energy absorption. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
