Investigation of paramagnetic character in the complex of akway bark (Drimys piperita Hook f.) as a radical scavenger

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the magnetic character of complex compounds from akway bark (Drimys piperita Hook f.) as a free radical scavenger. This research uses several analytical methods. Polarization microscopy used to characterize the birefringence of the crystals phenomenon. Inductively coupled plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) shows the types of transition metals contained, namely Mg, Cu and Fe. The X-Ray Powder Diffraction (XRD) showed crystal growth. The Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) showed coordination complex bond between organic compounds found in akway bark with its transition metals at vibration absorption wavelengths of 1000-400cm-1. Whereas to determine the paramagnetic properties and the ability of the radical scavenger from the akway bark performed using Electron Spin Resonance (ESR). The scavenging potential is compared with 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). The result shows that akway bark was able to reduce the intensity of standard free radicals at 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). © 2019 Author(s).
