Abstract

Tourism is positioned as a driver of economic and social transformation in villages, but its impact is its impacts are frequently heterogeneous across different contexts. This study aims to analyse the impact of tourism development in Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park on the lives of the community in the village of Ngadas, which still preserves the cultural traditions of Tengger. The research employed qualitative methods, with data collected through in-depth interviews and non-participant observation. The results of the research show that tourism activity has not yet caused significant changes in livelihoods or in the sociocultural structure. Agriculture remains the main economic activity, while tourism only functions as a secondary activity. This finding highlights the need for community-based tourism planning that is geared towards local needs and in line with cultural values. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
