Agriculture plays a crucial role in environmental sustainability, although this sector also contributes to various environmental issues such as land degradation and pollution. The increasing use of nitrogen and climate change further exacerbates these problems. Sustainable agriculture practices (SAP) are implemented to address environmental challenges in the agricultural sector. This research aims to examine the association between entrepreneurial orientation and the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices among rice farmers in East Java. specifically in the districts of Mojokerto and Malang. Involving 257 respondents, the study employs principal component analysis (PCA) to simplify data, Multivariate Probit to evaluate the impact of entrepreneurial orientation, and Ordered Probit to measure farmers’ adoption levels. The analysis results using the multivariate probit model indicate that innovative attitudes, proactivity, social participation, education level, farming experience, land area, asset ownership, and land ownership are associated with the adoption of various sustainable farming practices. Furthermore, the results from the ordered probit model confirm that several factors are significantly associated with the adoption of sustainable agriculture practices among farmers. Innovative attitudes, proactivity, participation in farming communities, education level, and land area each show significant associations with farmers’ tendencies to adopt sustainable practices. This study contributes to the literature by linking entrepreneurial orientation, typically applied in business studies to sustainable agriculture, providing new empirical evidence on how farmers’ innovativeness and proactiveness drive environmental sustainability in developing-country contexts. © 2026 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
